Learning More About Rays Radio’s Dave Wills

The Rays get ready to begin a three-game series in the Bronx, and Steve Carney starts the show by discussing some of the aspects the Rays will have to improve on if they wish to close the gap (0:45).  He also gives his thoughts on former Rays manager Joe Maddon being fired by the Los Angeles Angels (7:00).

Steve is then joined by George Ofman, the host of the podcast Tell Me A Story I Don’t Know, whose latest episode, dropping on June 14, features a conversation with Rays Radio broadcaster Dave Wills (22:20).  George tells us about how he first met Dave at a long-defunct sports service in the mid-1980s, gives us a sneak preview of Dave’s story about how he got the Rays Radio job, and teases us with a story about Dave, fellow Chicago broadcaster Dan Pompei, and a trip to Tijuana that you’ll have to listen to his podcast to hear what happened!

Steve Carney is the founder and publisher of St. Pete Nine. One of the people most associated with baseball coverage in Tampa Bay, he spent 13 seasons covering the Rays for flagship radio station WDAE, first as producer of Rays Radio broadcasts, then as beat reporter beginning in 2011. He likes new analytics and aged bourbon, and is the owner of one of the ugliest knuckleballs ever witnessed by baseball scouts.
