A Rough Start To The 2022 Grapefruit League

Spring Training games have started for the Tampa Bay Rays, and St. Pete Nine’s Steve Carney recaps how the start of the Grapefruit League hasn’t gone the Rays’ way.  He also gets into how the big name free agents spurned Tampa Bay and a chance to compete in the American League East for more money in other (some would say easier) divisions.

He also maps out some of the names that are still out there that could interest the Tampa Bay front office, and gives you a scouting report on the two newest members of the club, just acquired this week.

Finally, rumors continue to swirl about the future of a few Rays outfielders, so we discuss the possibility of losing Kevin Kiermaier, Austin Meadows or Manuel Margot, and if Tyler Glasnow‘s hope of pitching this year hasbeen extinguished before the season even starts.

Steve Carney is the founder and publisher of St. Pete Nine. One of the people most associated with baseball coverage in Tampa Bay, he spent 13 seasons covering the Rays for flagship radio station WDAE, first as producer of Rays Radio broadcasts, then as beat reporter beginning in 2011. He likes new analytics and aged bourbon, and is the owner of one of the ugliest knuckleballs ever witnessed by baseball scouts.
