Early Lead Not Enough For Rays Against Yankees

Tyler Glasnow could not hold on to an early 2-0 lead, and Tampa Bay’s hitters could not manage a hit after the fifth inning Tuesday, allowing the New York Yankees to come back and beat the Rays 5-3 in 11 innings at Yankee Stadium.

Austin Meadows got the Rays on the board again in the first inning, as he turned around a Domingo German pitch and sent it off the facing of the second deck in right for his team-leading 13th home run of the season.

Glasnow put up zeroes in the first two innings, but the Yankees rallied with two outs in the third thanks to a walk to Clint Frazier and walks to DJ LeMahieu and Rougned Odor which loaded the bases, and a walk to Aaron Judge forced in a run, then a wild pitch allowed New York to tie the game.

The Yankees took the lead an inning later thanks to a solo homer by Miguel Andujar.  That lead would not last long, as Kevin Kiermaier homer in the next half inning to tie the game back up at 3-3.

Kiermaier’s homer would be the last hit the Rays would get Tuesday, though Tampa Bay would get runners into scoring position in the eighth, and twice in extra innings getting the go-ahead run to third base, though they’d be unable to drive them in.

The Yankees also had plenty of opportunities late in the game, including loading the bases in the tenth before Andrew Kittredge struck out Gary Sanchez, but Frazier ended the game by driving out a sider that got too much of the plate.

The loss snaps Tampa Bay’s five-game winning streak.
