Two Rays Placed On IL, Three Recalled, Smith Dealt To Braves

The Tampa Bay Rays made a handful of roster moves Wednesday prior to their matchup with the Baltimore Orioles.

The team placed pitchers Luis Patino and Cody Reed on the 10-day injured list, and recalled right-handers Louis Head and Trevor Richards from Triple-A Durham.

Reed was removed from Tuesday night’s game with a recurrence of numbness in his left hand, while Patino, who pitched into the fourth inning, has a laceration on the middle finger of his right hand.

Kiermaier Activated From Injured List

Tampa Bay also activated outfielder Kevin Kiermaier from the 10-day injured list after missing eight games with a sprained left wrist.

Kiermaier is hitting .217/.299/.290 with five RBI in 23 games.

To make room on the active roster for Kiermaier, infielder Kevin Padlo was optioned to Durham after Tuesday’s win

Smith Sent To Braves

Finally, the Rays have traded catcher Kevan Smith to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for cash.

Smith appeared in just three games this year for Tampa Bay after signing a minor-league deal in the off-season, going 1 for 4 with a pair of strikeouts at the plate.  He had been designated for assignment on Sunday when Francisco Mejia returned from the injured list.
