Fleming Moved To IL, Head Recalled

The Rays had to place left-hander Josh Fleming, who threw 3 2/3 innings in Friday night’s win,  on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right calf strain.

“It’s something that a month and half ago-ish kind of tweaked it a little bit and we’ve been monitoring it a little bit,” Fleming said.  “Yesterday, it kind of tightened up in the last inning.  I don’t know if it was more of a cramp or what.  I woke up this morning and it was a little more sore than normal.”

Both Fleming and manager Kevin Cash feel Fleming’s stay on the injured list should be a short one, and because of Tampa Bay’s schedule, the left-hander could miss as little as one start.

“We’ve got to find a way to make sure we that keep these guys healthy, and that it doesn’t miss an extended period of time,” Cash said.  “We’ve dealt with calf issues that can grow into four, five, six weeks, and we really need to avoid that.”

To take Fleming’s spot on the active roster, the Rays recalled reliever Louis Head from Triple-A Durham.  This will be the 31-year-old’s sixth stint with the Rays, which he has no record and a 3.00 in six appearances, all out of the bullpen.
