Arozarena Returns From COVID IL, But Yarbrough Heads To List

The Rays will get outfielder Randy Arozarena back from the COVID-related injured list after the 26-year-old missed the entire weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles, but they’ll lose one of their potential starters for this upcoming series in the process.

Arozarena was reinstated from the COVID IL Tuesday afternoon, but left-hander Ryan Yarbrough took his spot on the list.

Arozarena said before Tuesday’s game that his wife, who is eight months pregnant, and their daughter both tested positive for COVID-19, which is why he was a close contact.  Because of his wife’s condition, she was hospitalized, and remains in the hospital, but Arozarena said she is improving and that he feels confident about returning to the team.

Yarbrough, who was on pace to start Wednesday’s middle game of the series in Boston, has notched a 6-4 record with a 4.76 ERA in 22 appearances, including 17 starts this year.

In addition, the Rays placed reliever DJ Johnson on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder sprain suffered in Sunday’s game against Baltimore, and recalled reliever Louis Head from Triple-A Durham.
